Have you ever found yourself working on your laptop all day but on reflection, achieving very little?
This was me a few months ago, I was working hours and hours, but I wasn't being very productive with my time and this impacted on my partner and friends. I was continually working but felt stressed because I was not completing my activities.
A few months ago I completed a confidence course by Emma Dawson which you can read more about here. This was extremely helpful and in a 1-2-1 session Emma suggested I tried ‘Time Blocking’.
I had never heard of time blocking but when Emma explained it to me and showed me an example of her week I couldn’t wait to try it!
So what is ‘Time Blocking’?
“Schedule it, so it happens.”
Time blocking is very merely scheduling your to-do list against your calendar. You block off time for that activity.
It is a useful productivity tool but can be an effective tool for doing more things we want to do in all areas of our lives. I know this sounds simple but I had never even thought of doing this before, and it really does work!
How did I do it?
With Emma’s guidance, I had six categories that In out block for, and there are:
- Content – for my blog or articles for other people
- Visibility – online
- Self-Development – reading, meditation, audio books, journalling
- Admin - Emails/bills/phonecalls etc
- Free Time
Here is an example of my time blocks for the 11th and 12th of June:
Once the blocks are in I make sure I abide by it and complete it, preventing procrastination and enabling myself to be the master of my schedule.
The one block I need to work on the most to abide by is ‘Free Time’ I find it hard to put the laptop down and relax, but I am working on this.
If this is something you would like to try, I would advise to have a go and find out what works for you. You may have different categories, or you may prefer to time block the individual activities, e.g. phone calls, emails etc
There is no right or wrong way to do this it is to help you work less but become more productive in the hours you do work.
I have noticed when I stop time blocking I work more hours but become more stressed and less productive which impacts my whole being.
I am so grateful for finding out about this tool because it allows me to work less, achieve more and also have boundaries around my work hours. I still need to work on this and it is constantly a work in progress; however, time blocking helps me to achieve this.
